Gauri was a journalist, publisher and a critic of right-wing groups. She strongly opposed Hinduism because she thought that women are treated as second-class creatures in this religion. She had a lot of people against her as she was against a major religion. Her own brother was against her due to the differences in their political ideas.
She was found dead in front of her house by three unidentified men in Bangalore. She had taken a different route to home that day and the assassin knew it. He was in touch with someone who was tracking her. One man was near her house waiting for her and he fired first. Two other assassins who followed her all the way home shot her next.
Many people and organizations expressed their denouncement. Protests over her death took place all across India. She was given a State funeral with a gun salute. She is the most high-profile journalist murdered in recent years. The Karnataka government announced a reward of 10 lakh rupees for providing information about the assassins.
