India Vs Columbia

On a sultry evening in Delhi, the boys in blue place a valorous effort to secure a win. However, fell agonizingly short of making history as they bowed out of their first-ever FIFA tournament. The 48,000-odd crowd at the Jawaharlal Nehru sports stadium has seen a see-saw of emotions as the Indian colts suffered a grievous 2-1 loss against Colombia in their second cluster stage encounter of the FIFA under seventeen World Cup. Jeakson Singh Thounaojam, however, was the brilliant spot of the night as he engraved his name in history books by turning into the 1st Indian player to net a goal in a FIFA World Cup across age groups. However, a brace from Juan Penaloza bust the Indian hearts and helped Colombia keep its campaign alive.

After suffering a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the USA in the 1st match of the group stage, India began their second match on a positive note. There was a marked amendment in India’s approach in their match against Colombia as they began the match with a 4-4-2 combination. whereas in the previous match coach Luis Norton de Matos opted for a defensive approach, on Monday, India displayed an offensive play of football from the beginning part of the first half. Soon with an energetic JLN crowd behind them, India looked threatening with the attack as Ninthoinganba Meetei created consistent runs down the flank and probed the Colombian defense. however, it had been the host nation that came close to open the score in the twelfth minute of the match when no 10, Abhijit Sarkar had an elegant one-touch play, beating the Colombia defenders and was left one on one with the keeper. However, to the frustration of the gang, his shot went straight to the goalkeeper who parried it wide. Towards the top of the 1st half, Asian country had yet one more golden probability at gaining the lead once Kerala’s, Rahul Kannoly had an enormous chance of putt Asian country ahead. Another stunning surpass Boris saw him one on one with the goalkeeper however his volley hit the crossbar and also the scoreline remained tied at 0-0 at the break. Despite Colombia having the bulk of the possession within the half the Indian defenders place during a smart performance, to stay the opposition attackers treed. Goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh conjointly realized some of the saves to stay Asian country within the look for a win.

Much like the beginning of the 1st half, Colombia began the half on the offensive. however this point they went one step more and punished India by netting the first goal of the match. yet again it was Juan Penaloza who hit a curled one along with his left-foot that saw the ball whiz past goalkeeper Dheeraj into the net at the forty-eighth minute. This prompted Asian country to react with a flurry of attacks however they were unable to place the ball into the net. Colombia, meanwhile, opted to travel on the defensive and soak the pressure. an hour into the match and India made their 1st chance as Abhijit Sarkar created a way for Aniket Jadhav.

Jeakson was left unmarked at the near post and he coolly placed the ball into the net past an unfortunate Kevin Mier. Sadly, India’s joy, was temporary as Penaloza scored a moment later snatching back Colombia’s lead. India had paid the price for not defending properly and what followed was a deathly silence. Thereafter, the host side tried hard to come back into the match however it was insufficient too late. the ultimate whistle brought an end to India’s campaign and they were left questioning themselves where they went wrong. However, all said and done they’re going to be happy with themselves as they gave in their all into this match and created the whole country proud.
